ABRAHAM W. THOMPSON

This grave marker has been in a field west of Petaluma since at least the 1970s. It is flat in the ground and is made of concrete.

It reads:
Abraham W. Thompson
1850--1950

This is an unusual marker. It has a certain "institutional" look to it -- well done, certainly not home-made. Clearly, the concrete was poured into a mold with the lettering preset. There is no extraneous information, just the name and dates. It reminds me of the markers made by the Knights of Pythias for their cemetery in Kenwood, east of Santa Rosa, except that the Pythian markers are brass or bronze plates.

An examination of the California Death Index does not show this person, even if the dates are stretched to 1849-51 and 1949-51. Mr. Thompson may have been buried elsewhere and his marker brought to Sonoma County. Another possibility is that his ashes and the marker may have been brought from some other state and buried at the current location.
