Child's tombstone, taken from Rural Cemetery, to be returned
After Tombstone Amnesty returned the three Munk headboards to Calistoga's Pioneer Cemetery, articles appeared in the Napa County press. Soon after, I got a call from a Mr. David Simich of the Napa Marble & Granite Works in Napa. A tombstone had been dumped at his front door ten years ago but he had been unable to find where it belonged. I was able to determine that the headstone, for "Little Nettie Combs," had been stolen many years ago from the Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery. Nettie had died in June 1877 of measles. She had been buried in Rural Cemetery but her tombstone was missing.
I went to Napa, picked up the tombstone, and returned it to the Rural Cemetery Preservation Committee. They were glad to have it returned after so many years. A formal return ceremony is scheduled for 4:00 P.M., Tuesday 23 May 2006 at a meeting of the Santa Rosa City Council. Everyone is invited.
