SONOMA COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY Board Members Present: Harry Lapham, John Schubert, Tony Hoskins, Sean Bressie, Jeff Tobes, Jeremy Nichols, Guy Smith, Phyllis Schmidt, Kathy Fitzpatrick
The 1st Annual retreat of the Sonoma County Historical Society Board was spent sharing ideas and suggestions as to what we, as the Historical Society for Sonoma County already do well and areas were we could improve. Below is a synopsis of the discussions.
· Membership
- Agreed more attention needed to membership roles. Suggestion made was to have Susan Burns contact delinquent members for renewals.
- List new members with a Welcome in the quarterly journal
- Involve local educators from the Sonoma County high schools, Santa Rosa Junior College, and Sonoma State University (public and private institutions) with a 1 year membership to include receipt of the quarterly Historian to these local schools history departments. Jeff Tobes will compile a list of the department heads while Kathy Fitzpatrick will compose a welcome letter.
- It was agreed to begin offering quarterly meetings for members which will include a guest speaker/topic and will be held at the Sonoma County Museum (pending Museum approval) Jeremy Nichols graciously volunteered to organize and schedule the guest speakers.
- To coincide with the Heritage Network Meetings (2nd Saturday in the months of January, April, July, and October) it was agreed the Quarterly meetings will commence on the 1st Thursday of the month following a scheduled Heritage Network Meeting. (February, May, August and November) Target date for the first of these meetings is Thursday, November 1, 2007 7:00pm – 8:30pm (doors open at 6:30pm)
- Also agreed was the importance of having The Historian’s publication and distribution completed by the end of the month of December, March, June, and September. This will keep the Historian available for distribution at the Heritage Meetings and assist in advertising of the Quarterly Members Meetings and the announcement of the guest speaker/topic.
- Tony suggested offering a honorarium to each guest speaker.
- With tentative plans for guest speakers, a discussion was held regarding the purchase of an LCD Projector, screen, and possibly Audio enhancers (small P/A system). Jeff motioned a limit of $3500.00 for the purchase of A/V equipment. Guy Smith seconded. Unanimously approved. Sean Bressie will look into the purchase and report back to the board.
- Idea for a benefactor for the A/V equipment was brought up. Sean will work with Lee to put a notice in the upcoming Historian.
- Everyone agreed to how invaluable the Heritage Network was to the Society. A suggestion was made about possibly having a “Heritage Network” page in the quarterly Historian. The page would include news, updates, and suggestion/feedback from members in the outlying groups.
- Another suggestion was offering the Historian at local stores for purchase (i.e. Sawyer’s News Stand, Hand Goods etc). Also to generate interest in the publication, an idea was to distribute a free copy of the Historian at the Heritage Network Meetings for a trial period.
- Incorporate a logo for use by the outlying historical groups on their website (i.e. Sonoma County Heritage Network/Historical Society affiliation).
- Lastly, a suggestion for brochures (Tri-fold) which would mention our website, membership info, and include historical sites in Sonoma County listing. These brochures could be distributed at local shops, motels (for visitors to Sonoma County) and possibly be included in Welcome Wagon information for newcomers to Sonoma County.
- Sean announced he is working to make available on the website past/present Historian publications. The goal is to be able to research and download topics from the Historian archives by a certain word or words.
- San Francisco Walk: Jeff announced that currently there are 36 people signed up for the 25 mile historical walk through San Francisco scheduled for June 23, 2007. Pictures from past walks and additional info for this years walk are available on the website.
- Fundraiser/Annual Picnic 2007: Tony announced Robert Gallo and Kate MacMurray have generously offered the use of the MacMurray Ranch for 2007 Fundraiser/Annual Picnic. Lunch along with tours of the ranch and possibly a showing of an early Fred MacMurray motion picture are on the slate. Tony will be in contact with Robert Gallo to get on OK for possible dates, prices, and attendance figures. More info to come.
- With the recent exit of Roberta Harlan, Simone Wilson, and Creighton Bell, all members are asked to think of possible persons who may be interested in joining the board to fill the vacancies. Ask around!
Next Board Meeting: Thursday, May 17th at 7pm - Sonoma County Library Annex
