SONOMA COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY Absent Board members: Phyllis Schmitt, Roberta Harlan, Ron Davis and Guy Smith. Treasurer's Report: Jeff reported that we are solvent after paying bills for the annual dinner at Fountaingrove Inn with an attendance of 144. Sean Bressie was introduced as our new website communicator. Sean has become well-versed in history while taking part in some of Jeff Tobes' famed long-distance hikes. Creighton reported that membership was steady. He also indicated that he would give up that post by the end of the year. After concern was expressed regarding the keeping of membership records, it was decided to have a committee meeting Tuesday, Apr. 22, that will include at least Tony, Harry, Creighton and maybe Lee. The Cemeterian continued his historic comments about the Chanate cemetery, reminding all that the cemetery will be part of the county-wide cleanup campaign Apr. 29. Jeremy announced he will speak to the Napa Valley Genealogical society at the Senior Citizens Center Apr. 20 on cemetery restoration, using Chanate as an example. Jeremy also has three alleged historic markers which he will return to the Calistoga Cemetery under his Tombstone Amnesty program. They're part of the history of the Munk family. Ten minutes of "Digger O'Dell" puns by insensitive board members finished Jeremy's report. Back at the website, Tony suggested we update the announcements of our awards. Sean said, even with our limited activity at present, the website is getting 200 to 400 hits a day. Sean said the "sky's the limit on what we can do" in terms of providing more information. Lee and others agreed it would be a good idea to put some old articles and perhaps copies of older journals on the website. People interested in the website can attend a committee meeting 10:30 a.m. Apr. 19 at the annex. Jeff has had several signups for the June 24 hike, dinner and dance which runs from the Ocean to the Lapham Ranch. Jeff hopes for 30-50 hikers. He and Harry will get together to plan the details and iron aprons for the event. Since Simone announced her retirement as editor of the Historian after 14 years, a prospect for layout had to decline taking over the post because of health problems. Lee said he would do the layout for the next three issues. Michelle Jolly of Sonoma State University approached the SCHS, asking us to channel funds to be used on a County Women's Oral History Project. We approved the idea as Creighton moved and Jeremy seconded the motion. Harry suggested we take a field trip to the Mechanics Institute Library in San Francisco to see their 2006 history exhibit. First half of October seemed like a good tentative date. Picnic--Efforts will be made to secure the Petaluma Adobe, perhaps Sunday, Aug. 20. Next meeting is Thursday, May 18, at the Annex, 7 p.m. Submitted happily but not as happily as Roberta would submit it, Lee Torliatt
