Report of Oct 14, 2006 meeting at Union Hotel Bocce Ballroom

Harry welcomed us to Occidental, and gave a brief history of the Bocce Ballroom, and thanked Barbara Pozzi Gonnella for our continental breakfast. He called the meeting to order at 9:45 a.m., we introduced ourselves and proceeded with reports.

Occidental Heritage Group Heidi Schmidt reported the Occidental Heritage Days have been successful. The book “An Historical and Anecdotal Walking Tour of…Occidental” by Amie Hill and Harry is still available. The group now has the Harry Lapham photo collection of approximately 2000 images.

Sonoma Historian Editor Lee Torliatt announced that Harry will receive an award at the Santa Rosa City Council meeting on November 13 at 7 p.m. Lee reminded us to send him news items for the Historian. The Fountain Grove collection has been placed in the Sonoma County Museum. The G. K. Hardt Estate has made several project grants recently. You might investigate for your organization. Cloverdale Historical Society Jim Wagele reported they are adding more work space at the back of the Museum. Two guided Cloverdale Cemetery walks are scheduled for October 29, 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. (For more info call 894-2067.) The annual Old Time Fiddle Contest will be on January 26 and 27, 2007. Current projects include the “Century Family Project,” histories of families in the area for 100 years or more; a “Cloverdale Walking Tour”; an “Historic Street Index”; and the Cloverdale edition of the ubiquitous Arcadia Books.

Gail Unzelman Gail is the author of “Sonoma County Wineries” (Arcadia Publishers) which was produced for the benefit of the Wine Library Associates of Sonoma County (supporters of the Healdsburg Wine Library). Current exhibit at San Francisco’s Museo Italoamericano is “Planting Roots, Reaping Harvest.” It presents the contribution of Italian immigrants and their descendants to the Napa and Sonoma Wine Industry.

Sonoma State Historical Park Association Elizabeth Kane announced the 2nd Annual Sonoma Heritage Tour, Sonoma by Candlelight, on November 4, 1 to 9 p.m., featuring music, dancing, visits to historic Sonoma sites staffed by docents in period clothes and special restaurant menus. Sonoma County Museum Joann Mitchell announced the Hybrid Fields exhibit will continue until December 31st. The next exhibit will feature pottery by Marquerite Wildenhain produced at her Pond Farm studio near Guerneville. The Museum has recently accepted a collection of Carroll Barnes sculptures. The City of Santa Rosa will help store the artist’s works.

Sonoma County Landmarks Commission County Board of Supervisors is looking to appoint a person to the Commission. If you live and/or work in Supervisor District 3 and are interested, please contact Alison Sanford in Supervisor Tim Smith’s office at 565-2241 for more information.

Laguna de Santa Rosa Foundation Joe Honton reported restoration continues and they will soon break ground for the Laguna Learning Center and Office.

Tomales Regional History Center Nancy Conzett said their new exhibit, prepared by Lois Parks, covers fishing in Tomales and Bodega Bays and Smith family stories. An Open House is scheduled for November 5th, 1 to 4 p.m. The Center is supporting the Tomales Town Hall’s quest for a grant from Partners in Preservation and needs the Network’s support. Tony Hoskins reported for the following:
Sonoma County Historical Records Commission Peterson Prize winning essays are now in book form. $5 each, available at the library. Oral history interviews with county officials continue.
Sonoma County Library Local History & Genealogy Collection has again received a $25,000 grant to proceed with the photo project. 22,000 photos are now available online. John Schubert recently donated a collection of historical periodicals.
Santa Rosa Friends of the Library The laminated “Birdseye View of Santa Rosa” is still available at the library. Coming soon: Note cards featuring historic photos.
Sonoma County Genealogy Society will co-host a Family History Fair with the LDS Church on October 28. Morning session, 9:15 to 10:30, will be at the church, 5301 Badger Road, Santa Rosa. The afternoon session, devoted to using your computer for genealogy, will be nearby at the Rincon Valley Library, 6959 Montecito Boulevard from 1:15 to 4 p.m. The next regular meeting of the Society will be on November 18 at the Finley Center, 2060 West College Avenue, Santa Rosa, at 1 p.m. As usual, it will be preceded by Tony’s question and answer program at noon.
Stewarts Point Library Tony is assisting the Kashia Pomo Reservation in setting up a library, recommending books, hours etc.

Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery Preservation Committee Ray Owen reported the 10th Annual Lamplight Cemetery Tour grossed $18,000. Off leash dogs are still a problem and owners will be getting citations.

Rancho Bodega Historical Society Adri Boudewyn reported they have completed 4 camcorder interviews. High school students are creating the drawings to be used in the Society’s historical coloring book which will include English and Spanish captions. It will be a fund raiser for the Society and the school.

Russian River Historical Society Jane Barry reported they are moving to new quarters and are planning an exhibit in the Guerneville Library. They have two surplus photo enlargers and equipment. Sean Bressie said SRJC would be interested in acquiring them.

Sonoma Valley Historical Society Carol Page said they will be involved in the Sonoma Heritage Tour. On November 17th they will have a speaker on the Chinese in the vineyards. Children are invited to try on the Museum’s old fashioned clothes. There will be a traveling exhibit from the Northwestern Pacific RR Society.

Guy Smith reported on the following:
Georgetown TV’s History Channel filmed two episodes last summer. One covered President Lincoln’s use of hot air balloons in the Civil War. The second was about the World War I flying ace, the Red Baron.
Pacific Coast Air Museum The annual Air Show was again very successful.

Sonoma County Historical Society Sean Bressie, SCHSwebmaster@bressie.net, reported the Web site has a new server. He requested copies of information sent to Lee Torliatt for the Sonoma Historian. Sean will post the information on the SCHS Web site.

NWPRRHS Harold Mentzer reported they are planning a birthday party in January 2007 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Northwestern Pacific RR’s acquisition of several railroads. They have found a climate controlled facility to hold their archives and have received a $3500 donation to copy Bancroft photos.

Northwest Information Center Bryan Much told us about the Northwest Information Center at Sonoma State University. The Center serves 16 counties, from Mendocino Co. to Monterey Co. It provides information to landowners, scholars and the general public about archaeology, history, architecture and historical resources legislation. No charge for personal research. Bryan has participated in the clearing and mapping of the Chanate Cemetery and helped with Ridgeway Historic District research. Gina George reported they assist local tribes with their history projects, give tours of archeological materials to public and school groups, assist students with thesis projects, and help with historic registration, property investigation etc.

Chanate Historic Cemetery Jeremy Nichols reported they now have identified 1100 of the known 1500 grave markers. For the 4th year, “Day of Caring” volunteers helped clear the cemetery. The recently publicized Spring Hill Cemetery is now owned by Sonoma County and has a volunteer group. The Tombstone Amnesty Program continues.

Simone Wilson is arranging the Bodega Head and Coastal Access papers loaned to the Sonoma Co. Library.

Tom Origer & Associates Regarding the question about removing eucalyptus trees on Old Lakeville Highway reported at July’s Network meeting—it was determined most of the trees were on private property, not on the highway’s right of way. Tom needs information about the 1940s and 1950s lumber mills in the Annapolis area. (584-8200 or origer@origer.com ). Origer & Associates is giving away topo maps they no longer need.

Healdsburg Museum & Historical Society June Smith reported the net profit for the 2006 Instant Wine Cellar was $28,000. On Nov. 15 Thomas Reed, former Secretary of the Air Force, will present “An Insider’s History of the Cold War.” Proceeds benefit the Museum’s endowment fund. For info call 431-3325.

Harry introduced his cousin Ronald Lapham, Kathy Lapham Fitzpatrick and friends Ted and Shirley Weeks. The members present indicated they would like to continue to receive e-mails, between meetings, about Network current events and fundraisers.

After lunch at the Union Hotel there was a program about Sudden Oak Death at Harry’s ranch presented by Dr. David Rizzo, UC Davis professor. See 2nd attachment for Darlene Lamont and Ann Hines’ excellent report on this presentation.
