Harry called the meeting to order at 9:40 and thanked the Cloverdale Historical Society for arranging this meeting and providing refreshments. He announced that Earl Leon Carrillo, the great-grandson of Maria Carrillo, recently passed away at the age of 101 years. We introduced ourselves and proceeded with information and discussion about the 1906 Earthquake Anniversary Celebration
John Schubert asked each Network organization to contribute information, including photos, about their area and the earthquake. These will be published in book form as a Network project. The deadline for this info is early January. John’s e-mail is toyfrog@sonic.net
Gaye LeBaron said the Santa Rosa Committee has plans for a gathering at Old Courthouse Square early in the morning on April 18, 2006, with church bells chiming. The Santa Rosa Media Center will produce a program of 1906 earthquake stories which will be available on DVD. Tentative plans also include an Earthquake Fair on the following weekend.
Rebecca Baker reports the Luther Burbank Home & Gardens will provide earthquake information from Burbank’s writings and they plan an exhibit.

Cloverdale Historical Society
Museum Director Bonnie Asien reported the Old Time Fiddle Contest will be on 2 days (January 27 and 28) next year, with workshops added. The Museum has two volunteers working on inventory and the photo collections. They are considering publishing an Arcadia Images of America book.
Healdsburg Museum & Historical Society
President Al Loebel reported Healdsburg’s Images of America book should be available in November. Whitney Hopkins continues to catalog the collection and photos are being digitized. Valuable artifacts are being moved from outside storage areas into the Museum. Coming up: The annual Holiday Exhibit. The Home School History Fair opens on October 25. Deadline for the Family History Essays Contest for 3rd to 8th graders is October 26.
Preston Colony Tour On October 16th Healdsburg Museum’s Research Curator, Holly Hoods, will lead a guided tour of the Preston Church and four of the surviving private residences. Tickets are $25, including refreshments, and all proceeds go to pay for the church’s new roof.
Jack Florence reported Bill Knox’ collection of papers were donated to the Sonoma County Library. They will be available at the Healdsburg Wine Library.
Heritage Homes of Petaluma Nancy Sasser, vice-president, reported they promote the development and matinenance of the history of the town. Kit Schlich is president. They recently presented building preservation awards to18 individuals and businesses. They are establishing a revolving fund for preservation of Petaluma buildings. Watch for their Halloween Tour of 5 or 6 decorated historic homes on October 30th. Also coming up is the traditional “Holiday Lighted Parlor Tour” on December 4.
Petaluma’s Friends of the Water Creek Trestle hope to restore it for the 1910 trolley.
Tony Hoskins announced publication of this new Images of America book "Petaluma, a History in Architecture", written by Katherine J. Rinehart, Petaluma architectural historian.
NWPRRHS Harold Mentzer reported they are planning an Images of America book to be published in the spring. They are looking for a “home” for another caboose (Petaluma & Santa Rosa #1) which can no longer stay at Hunters Point. Gaye LeBaron Will teach a Lifelong Learning Class at Sonoma State University about World War II in Sonoma County. Let her know if you can provide any home front information—photos, slides, letters etc.
Sonoma County Museum Joann Mitchell reported the Sonoma County Historical Society has turned over ownership of 2,015 artifacts to the Museum. Tricia Watts is the Museum’s new Chief Curator.
Current exhbit is photographer Steven Galloway’s “Where Land Meets Art.”
Sonoma County Historical Society Editor Simone Wilson reported the latest edition of the Sonoma Historian will be in the mail soon. Articles include Toby Smith’s memories of the transformation, and moving, of the old Post Office which became today’s Sonoma County Museum and Walter H. Roeder’s “Treasures of the Justi Collection at Sonoma State University.”
California State Parks Marianne Hurley announced the East Sonoma County District Office has moved to a site on the Petaluma Adobe property. The West Sonoma County District Office is at Duncans Mills. The town of Sonoma is planning a candlelight tour of local adobe buildings on November 5. Jack London State Park has acquired an orchard on land formerly belonging to the Sonoma Developmental Center. Carol Dodge continues to work on the Bowers Map project.
Tom Origer & Associates Vicki Beard reported that the firm does historical archeological and architectural research. Tom Origer teaches archeology at Santa Rosa Junior College. They use the Arcadia Images of America books daily in their research. They need input on features along Santa Rosa’s creeks which can be included in the Creek Trails signage.
Pacific Coast Air Museum Ray Anderson reported Colonel Joe Rogers died and was buried in Arlington Cemetery. Ray shared 1911 photos of the first airmail plane which was reassembled in Cloverdale at the Citrus Fair site. It crashed there during a demonstration flight.
Rancho Bodega Historical Society New president Adri Boudewyn reported they are working on programs and presentations. Also in the works is an Arcadia Images of America book.
Sonoma County Chapter, California Land Surveyors Society Bob Curtis now has a collection of over 2,000 abstracts of title from the 1850s to 1925. They are indexed broadly by geographic location and cities. He also has an index to the original patents located in the City of Petaluma. He is assisting a historian researching the Spring Hill Cemetery west of Sebastopol.
Sonoma County Historical Records Commission Tony Hoskins reported for Dan Markwyn:
The commission will publish a Directory of Sonoma County Archives and Collections. Do you know of any collections (personal or otherwise) in the county?
Friends of the Carrillo Adobe update Tony Hoskins reported the So.Co. Historical Society has again retained Susan Brandt-Hawley to represent them in opposing the proposed development plans. The matter is scheduled to go before the Santa Rosa City Council again on October 25th. It wasn’t clear if this will be for an appeal or for a decision.
Donna Carrillo added that the present architectual plans call for 140 condos, plus senior housing and a 2-acre city park. An archeologist will be on the site during construction.
Sonoma County Genealogical Society President Tony Hoskins reminded us that the Society meets monthly (4th Saturday) at Lark Hall at 1:00 p.m. Preceding the meeting Tony conducts a genealogical question and answer hour beginning at noon. Next meeting—October 22nd.
Sonoma County Library Tony reported the Local History Library has again received county funds (over $25,000) to be used for enhancing the Historical Photo Collection. About 21,000 photos of the collection of 32,000 have been scanned and are available online. They also recently received a collection of blueprints.
Depot Park Museum June Smith reported for Diane Smith:
The Museum received a grant for almost $2,000 from the city of Sonoma and will be adding to their school tour program and children’s exhibits. They will also be redoing their railroad exhibit.
They are busy with book and photo sales; there’s lots of interest from families and businesses in the valley. They are thinking about a 20-year anniversary of the Wingo Regatta next spring in the sloughs south of town.
Tomales Regional History Center Nancy Conzett reported they will have an Open House on November 6 and are planning a 1906 earthquake exhibit. Lee Torliatt is writing a book about the area.
Occidental History Harry Lapham will present a program at the History Faire, sponsored by the Occidental Chamber of Commerce, on November 12. It will be at the former Harmony School Building and Harry’s topic is The Early Businesses and People of the Town.
Russian River Historical Society John Schubert reported the Society will hold a potluck luncheon meeting at the Koret Club in Monte Rio at noon on October 30th. Program is “Music on the River, Big Bands and Dance Halls.” Check out the RRHS Web site for lots of photos and information. www.russianriverhistory.org
John has recently published the 2nd edition of his book Guerneville Early Days—he has them for sale.
Windsor Historical Society From Steve Lehmann: The Windsor Town Reunion (formerly the Windsor School Reunion) will be held at Windsor Middle School on November 12 at 11:30. Lunch is $15. The Society will open their Museum in 2006.
Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery Preservation Committee Ray Owen reported the last Lamplight Tours netted over $10,000. The endowment fund now has over $150,000. They will participate in the 2006 Earthquake Anniversary Celebration. Ray shared information found in William W. Scott’s 1849 probate papers.
Chanate Historic Cemetery (and more) Jeremy Nichols reported that 15 people participated in the United Way Day of Caring at the C.H.Cemetery cleanup. They found dozens more cemetery markers. The Redwood Empire Chinese Association will place a plaque at the site and the county will provide a signboard and bench. Dedication will be in the spring next year.
The Pierrot painting is now at the conservators and enough money was donated to also cover the cost of a new frame.
A group has formed to suggest uses for the Sutter Hospital (old County Hospital) building on Chanate Road when the hospital moves to new quarters. Suggestions include using it to store the County Archives and to house the Local History & Genealogical Library.
Luther Burbank Home & Gardens Rebecca Baker reported a film crew from Japan has been filming there for several days. Their brochure is now available in French, German, Spanish and Japanese. They recently received a package of 1884 letters written by R. W. Bell, Burbank’s early partner. The Annual Holiday Open House will be on December 3 and 4.

Laguna de Santa Rosa Foundation Joe Honton reported the Foundation is going ahead with plans to restore the old farm house and two barns for an interpretive center and offices.
